THE FIRST GAY TOUR GUIDE IN ECUADOR

I am Francisco Guayasamin. I joined gay movements in Ecuador in 1998, carrying out various activities, starting as a defender of the human rights of sexually diverse people and I have the pleasure of being one of the pioneers in promoting gay tourism in Ecuador, as well as being one of the first gay men. in showing his face publicly.

I studied tourism when in Ecuador the career did not exist professionally. It was only a technical career. In those times, being gay was penalized, we were practically treated as if we were criminals, therefore, undertaking a project to promote gay tourism to our country was crazy.

At first it was very hard for me, since as a visible gay man I received many insults on the street and several death threats came to my phone from people belonging to conservative groups in the country who present themselves to the public as defenders of Christian morality, but behind the scenes they maintained a double standard, especially in the sexual aspect. A custom that has not changed to this day.

Also to spread awareness about this new type of tourism in Ecuador, it was necessary to open the field by explaining to the owners of tourist businesses what sexual diversity was, especially to the hotel staff with whom I was trying to teach them how to deal with gay people.

Some business owners were very reluctant, several of them told me to my face

– I don't like working with faggots or the classics - I hate homosexuals, they live in sin. God hates them. - But then seeing the human quality and respect that gay people have when they arrive at any of these places, the situation changed. As time went by, they called me putting their businesses at their disposal so that I could bring them gay clientele. They weren't just hotels, they were restaurants, sellers of crafts, gifts, flowers, chocolates, museums, and even specialized doctors, they invited me to their businesses, and they were very willing to deal with GLBT people. (Currently, several hoteliers tell me that they prefer to deal with gay men than with straight men. They tell me that they are more respectful, especially tidy and clean.)

When I started in 1998 as a gay activist, the acronym LGBT did not exist. Even in our community there was a lot of phobia towards trans people. In 2000 we created the first G&L guide in Ecuador, in which I met the first gay travel agency in the country. The company was managed by a couple in which one of the owners was Ecuadorian and the other owner was American.

I went to propose that they hire advertising with our guide, which at that time was only a brochure, and they were looking for personnel. Then submit my resume. I was lucky, I was accepted because my portfolio was the only one in which a gay man admitted his sexual orientation. The majority of resumes were from heterosexual men. My boss, who was from New Jersey, taught me how the gay community worked in the United States. He chose me because he told me – We gays help each other. By working with them I learned how developed gay tourism was in other countries.

Since homosexuality had recently been decriminalized in Ecuador, it was very hard to come out as homosexual in those times. My Ecuadorian boss never came out as gay for fear of reprisals. . In advertising abroad the agency promoted itself as gay, but in Ecuador it was an agency that we could call “normal clientele.” We were even very wary of putting the gay flag on the balcony of the establishment to attract gay tourists passing by on the street. There was the fear that some heterosexual who knew the meaning and was homophobic would approach the agency to attack us.

At that time, most people in Ecuador did not know the gay flag, rather they knew the flag of the Pachakutik indigenous movement, which has the 7 colors of the rainbow. That gave us the courage to install the flag on the office balcony.

In a march of the Pachacutec movement that passed in front of our office, they began to applaud us and shout fervently - Thank you for supporting us! - Although funny for us, that fact was also historic, it was the first time that the gay flag flew in Ecuador.

Because the gay tourists who came through the agency received treatment with heterosexual people, in which even the tourist guide was not gay, they only had contact with gay personnel through the internet. I realized certain shortcomings and based on this experience I decided to create my own business, to be the first personalized gay tourism guide in Ecuador.

In 2003 I started this project by promoting myself on the internet. My main idea was to provide humanized treatment to tourists, since many gay business owners only saw gays as big business, but not good treatment.

My main purpose was for my tourist to have a real experience about what everyday life in Ecuador offers. I did not want to present a disguised Ecuador as presented in most cases by tours programmed by large travel agencies. I think making the real Ecuador known has been a big part of my success.

Recognizing that each person has different tastes, from the first contact with the tourist, I try to find out what activities they like to do, so I propose a highly personalized tour for them. That has been another fundamental part of my work. Each tour I do is created especially for the tourist, couple or group that comes, based on their tastes and curiosities.

Since I started, I have dealt with hundreds of gay people from all over the world. Most of them have liked this experience, and once they have returned to their countries they have recommended to their friends that they get to know Ecuador and hire me as their guide.

Having overcome the times of pandemic in which many of us have had to face difficult times, we are very happy that once again several gay tourists are interested in getting to know Ecuador using our services.

Due to the training I have had both in tourism and as a GLBT activist, my slogan proudly says “No one knows the diversity of Ecuador better than I do.”

The funny thing about my job is that the majority of foreign tourists who hire me do so because they know that I am a tour guide and want to get to know Ecuador, while the majority of Ecuadorians who call me believe that gay tourism is “sex work.”

Now that we are looking forward to a better future for the gay population in various parts of the world, if you come to Ecuador it will be a pleasure to guide you and let you know my country. I will be waiting for you…

TOURIST GUIDE AND ADVICE FOR GAY PEOPLE WHO WANT TO VISIT OR LIVE IN ECUADOR

In 2003 Francisco Guayasamin created Ecuador Gay Tour Guide with which he offers packages.
Markets and hollows are part of the tours that foreign travelers take in the country.

Francisco Guayasamín is not a traditional tour guide.
For several years he has dedicated himself to putting together travel packages for the gay community, mostly for foreigners. With them - he says - he travels from emblematic places in Ecuador to the markets.
and hollows where he takes them to taste typical dishes, such as sausage broth.

Upon arrival in the country, travelers are received at the airport and then transported to a gay-friendly hotel by staff who belong to the group. “I have noticed that they not only feel comfort, but confidence and security.” He also highlights having formed friendships that are still maintained despite the distances.

Francisco, a native of Quito, explains that the tourism he offers is experiential.
“I show them how Ecuadorians operate, their gastronomy.
“I try to get them in touch with reality and have more experiences.”

Among the favorite destinations of gay travelers are the Historic Center of Quito,
the house of Oswaldo Guayasamín; Train trips to Alausí, Imbabura, Otavalo, Cotacachi,
the beaches of Manabí and Yasuní. “The colorful cities catch their attention, the dances they practice. Therefore, at the end of the itinerary, travelers tell me that they are going to have many
experiences to tell when returning to their country.”

Before undertaking his project, Francisco worked for the first agency that included the collective
in their packages. However, upon noticing that he only used it to attract more clients without giving them
a personalized offer, he decided in 2003 to create Ecuador Gay Tour Guide.

He points out that with his project he seeks to stop gays from being seen as perverse and damaged.
In addition to associating the tourism they practice with sexual activities.

“Those who travel are prepared people, who have a good income, and run companies.
If people open their minds, the country can be a good source of work and income.”

He assures that a passenger who arrives in Ecuador spends $5,000 in ten days. Precisely,
In 2012 the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) recognized in a report that
GLBTI travelers represent a dynamic and influential segment in the tourism sector.
Likewise, at the IV International GLBTI Tourism Convention held in Montevideo, Uruguay, they announced that the community represents 10% of global tourism activity.

His Signature “Ecuador Gay Tour Guide” is characterized by not only having gay tourists, but also gay tour guides, concierge staff, driver and owner or friendly accommodation and service providers.

Francisco, in addition to serving the community as a guide, has been advising gay people over 55 years of age since 2010 who are thinking of retiring or planning a place of retirement. Ecuador is the first option.

BAÑOS DE AGUA SANTA: AN ECUADORIAN HAVEN FOR LGBT AND RETIREES

Nestled in the breathtaking Andean highlands of Ecuador, Baños de Agua Santa, often simply referred to as Baños, beckons with its stunning natural beauty, adventure activities, and a surprisingly welcoming atmosphere. While not explicitly known as an LGBT "hub," several factors combine to make this charming town an increasingly attractive destination for LGBT expats and retirees seeking a vibrant yet tranquil life.

Ecuador has made significant strides in LGBTQ+ rights, legalizing same-sex marriage in 2019 and enshrining anti-discrimination laws. This legal framework fosters a generally tolerant environment throughout the country, and Baños is no exception. While it might not boast a dedicated "gay scene" in the style of larger international cities, the town exudes a laid-back and inclusive vibe. Interactions with locals are generally respectful, and a growing international community contributes to a diverse and accepting social fabric.

One of the primary draws of Ecuador for expats and retirees is its affordability, and Baños offers an exceptional quality of life without breaking the bank. Housing options range from charming colonial-style homes to modern apartments, often at significantly lower costs than in many Western countries. The cost of daily living, including groceries, transportation, and entertainment, is also considerably lower, allowing for a comfortable retirement or a more financially flexible expat life.

Beyond the economic advantages, Baños offers a wealth of experiences. For the adventurous soul, there are countless opportunities for hiking to stunning waterfalls, white-water rafting, canyoning, ziplining, and exploring the surrounding Amazonian foothills. The iconic "Swing at the End of the World" ,Casa del Árbol, provides breathtaking panoramic views and unforgettable photo opportunities.

For those seeking a more relaxed pace, Baños lives up to its name "Baths of Holy Water" with its natural thermal springs, believed to possess therapeutic properties. Numerous spas and bathhouses offer a chance to unwind and rejuvenate amidst the stunning natural scenery. The town also boasts a vibrant local market where one can find fresh produce, artisanal crafts, and delicious Ecuadorian cuisine.

While specific LGBT-focused establishments might be limited, the existing expat community in Baños is known for its friendliness and inclusivity. Connecting with like-minded individuals is often facilitated through social groups, language exchange programs, and shared interests in outdoor activities or cultural events. This sense of community can be particularly valuable for those relocating to a new country, offering support and friendship.

Furthermore, the Ecuadorian people are generally known for their warmth and hospitality. While cultural norms may differ, respectful engagement and an open mind are typically met with kindness and acceptance. Many expats find that learning some basic Spanish significantly enhances their integration and allows for deeper connections with the local community.

It's important to have realistic expectations. Baños is a relatively small town, and the overt visibility of LGBT culture might not be as prominent as in larger metropolitan areas. However, the underlying acceptance and the focus on community and shared experiences can be incredibly appealing.

Access to specialized healthcare catering specifically to LGBT needs might be more limited in Baños compared to larger cities like Quito or Guayaquil. However, Ecuador generally has a good healthcare system, and many doctors are English-speaking, particularly in areas with a significant expat population.

As Ecuador continues to embrace inclusivity and as Baños gains further recognition as a desirable destination for international travelers and residents, it is likely that the town will become even more welcoming and supportive of its LGBT community. The combination of natural beauty, affordable living, adventure, relaxation, and a generally accepting atmosphere positions Baños de Agua Santa as a hidden gem for LGBT expats and retirees seeking a fulfilling and enriching life in the heart of the Andes. It offers a unique blend of tranquility and vibrancy, making it a place where one can truly feel at home.

LGBT RIGHTS IN ECUADOR

Ecuador is one of the most progressive countries in Latin America when it comes to LGBT rights. In 2019, the country legalized same-sex marriage, becoming the fifth country in South America to do so.

In addition to marriage equality, Ecuador has also taken significant steps towards protecting the rights of LGBT people. Discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity is illegal, and LGBT individuals have the right to serve in the military.  No adoption for same sax couples is allowed.

Ecuador has also taken steps to address the issue of hate crimes against LGBT people. In 2014, the country's penal code was amended to include hate crimes based on sexual orientation and gender identity, and penalties were increased for those who commit such crimes.

Despite these legal protections, however, there is still work to be done to ensure full equality for LGBT people in Ecuador. Discrimination and harassment continue to be reported, particularly in rural areas and among transgender individuals.

However, the progress made in recent years is a testament to the resilience and activism of Ecuador's LGBT community. Organizations such as the LGBT Chamber of Commerce and the LGBTI Human Rights Foundation work tirelessly to advocate for the rights of LGBT people, and their efforts have not gone unnoticed.

Overall, while there is still much work to be done, the legalization of same-sex marriage and the protections afforded to LGBT people in Ecuador are significant steps towards greater equality and inclusion for all.

PRECAUTIONS FOR LGBT TRAVELERS TO ECUADOR

Certainly, here are some important precautions that LGBT travelers should keep in mind while visiting Ecuador:

Public displays of affection: Although same-sex marriage is legal in Ecuador, public displays of affection between same-sex couples may still be frowned upon in some areas. It is recommended to exercise discretion and avoid overt displays of affection in public.

Local attitudes: While many Ecuadorians are accepting and welcoming of LGBT visitors, some may hold conservative views on sexuality and gender identity. It is important to be aware of local attitudes and customs and to respect them while traveling in Ecuador.

Safety: As with any travel destination, it is important to stay safe while traveling in Ecuador. Avoid walking alone at night, especially in unfamiliar areas, and be aware of your surroundings at all times.

Discrimination: While discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity is illegal in Ecuador, it may still occur in some areas. If you experience discrimination or harassment, report it to the local authorities or your embassy.

Documentation: LGBT travelers should carry all necessary documentation, such as passports and visas, as well as any medical documentation related to gender transition or HIV status. It is also a good idea to carry a list of emergency contacts and to register with your embassy before traveling to Ecuador.

By keeping these precautions in mind, LGBT travelers can enjoy a safe and enjoyable trip to Ecuador, while experiencing the beauty and diversity of this unique country.

THE WATERFALLS ROUTE OF RUMIPAMBA VALLEY

Near Quito we can enjoy the waterfall route in which the wonderful landscape of flora and fauna becomes one with mother  nature.

CONDOR MACHAY

In Quichua its name means “Nest of the Condor”. Sometimes you can see condors flying over the waterfall. A path to travel at a good pace, leads to the site known as Cóndor Machay, which houses the powerful waterfall. During the trip, we  pass a series of smaller waterfalls generated in the course of the Pita River.

During the journey we will observe beautiful and picturesque landscapes that in their highest part offer a spectacular panorama of elevations that are part of the Avenue of the Volcanoes. On a clear day we can observe the volcanoes: Pichincha, Ilaló, Cotopaxi, Sincholagua, Rumiñahui, Pasochoa, Antisana, Cayambe, Ilinizas, Atacazo, Corazón, La Viudita, Quilindaña.

While we walk along the route drawn to reach Cóndor Machay, we will also enjoy a series of waterfalls of various shapes and altitudes. The exuberant vegetation of the place, with forests of alder, pumamaquis, myrtle, achupallas, suro, cedrillo, and a variety of orchids will leave you amazed.

Species of mammals, birds and amphibians typical of the Andean region accompany you during the journey. The crystal clear waters of the river allow us to glimpse trout in their natural state. The imposing and whimsical rock shapes of the canyon invite reflection, leaving the visitor absorbed, they will leave you amazed.

LA CASCADA DEL FUEGO

This waterfall is a magical and highly energetic site considered by the shamans who live around the place. It is believed that by crossing under the waterfall and receiving the dew of its waters one can cleanse the aura.

This waterfall is approximately 60 meters high and its waters come from the melting of the Cotopaxi and Sincholagua volcanoes.

During a journey to the Firefall we will find remnants of primary and secondary forests. Some of the species present include eucalyptus, blackberries, cedars and guayacanes.

DISCOVERING THE ENCHANTING CRATER OF QUILOTOA

Nestled high in the Ecuadorian Andes, the Crater of Quilotoa is a spectacular destination that mesmerizes visitors with its surreal beauty and rich cultural heritage. This water-filled caldera, formed from a volcanic eruption over 800 years ago, is now a shimmering turquoise lake surrounded by dramatic cliffs and rugged terrain, making it a must-visit spot for nature lovers and adventurers alike.

The main attraction is, of course, the Quilotoa Lake itself. The 3-kilometer-wide crater hosts a serene lake with a distinct greenish-blue hue, caused by dissolved minerals. The panoramic view from the rim is breathtaking, offering a sight of the vibrant lake contrasting starkly against the stark volcanic landscape. For the more adventurous, a hike down to the lake’s edge is an unforgettable experience, with opportunities to rent kayaks and explore the calm waters up close.

In our tour we are going to stop  in Tigua,  a small village that  is known for its vibrant folk art. The Tigua paintings, characterized by bright colors and depictions of local life, are a wonderful souvenir and a way to support local artisans.

Every Saturday, the town of Zumbahua hosts a bustling market that’s vibrant with colors, sounds, and aromas. It's a great place to buy local produce, textiles, and experience the lively atmosphere of a traditional Andean market.

Quilotoa is located at an elevation of about 3,914 meters (12,841 feet), so visitors should be prepared for the effects of high altitude and take it slow to acclimate properly. The weather can be unpredictable, so dressing in layers and being prepared for sudden changes is advisable.

Whether you're trekking the loop, exploring local villages, or simply soaking in the views from the crater rim, Quilotoa offers an unforgettable journey into one of Ecuador's most captivating regions.
